Chandler Hutchison (Wing, 22, 6'7", 200 lbs)

Statistical Profile

Strengths

Hutchison is a long, versatile wing prospect who led his Boise State team in points, rebounds, assists and steals this past season. He has plus athleticism and he’s a quick scorer who gets to the rim and can make plays for others. He’s extremely fluid as an athlete getting into the paint, and has great touch to go along with long strides and plus body control helping him score on the move. As a scorer, he’s above average across the board, finishing above the 60th percentile in transition, as the ball handler in pick-and-rolls, spotting up, on isolations, off screens, and on put-backs.

He has great footwork getting into the paint and is a very effective scorer on the interior, showcasing the ability to finish through contact. He’s great off closeouts where he is supremely agile getting to the basket and projects as an excellent slasher at the next level. He has great instincts offensively, and is a very good playmaker. He can pass on the move and pass from the post, and should be able to seamlessly contribute in most NBA motion systems.

Defensively, Hutchison is a great rebounder for his position and crashes the glass hard on both ends. He has great size and length and projects as a swtichable, versatile defender. He’s engaged off the ball defensively and is a solid team defender, using his length to disrupt passing lanes and get steals.

Weaknesses

Hutchison just turned 22 and is one of the older players in the Draft. His upside is capped by his age and while he has a lot of college experience, it is fair to question how much room he has to grow and develop. His jump shot is unproven. He shot 68% from the free throw line and was a poor three point shooter until his last two years where he never eclipsed 38%. His form is a work in progress and can stray towards his old release point which is very low.

As a ball handler, Hutchison lacks creativity or a tight handle in isolation situations. He’s mostly a straight line driver and has poor lateral quickness as a dribbler. His unrefined handle causes him to lose the ball often and he is very turnover prone, getting stripped often. He lacks a solid pull up or floater game and is mostly a catch-and-shoot jump shooter or finisher at the rim. He attempted jump shots off the dribble this season and was quite bad, scoring .438 ppp, good for the 8th percentile. On jump shots in general he finished in the 48th percentile, and he was in the 25th percentile on runners to go along with the 15th percentile on post-ups. The only shot attempts in the half court where he was outstanding was on non post-ups around the rim, where he scored 1.344 ppp and finished in the 85th percentile due to his excellent finishing ability.

Defensively, Hutchison seems versatile but it is hard to say if that is truly accurate. Boise State played a zone defense so it was rare to see him guard in isolation. He’s not laterally quick so it may be difficult for him to stay with quicker guards on the perimeter or stay with ball handlers in space.

Summary

Hutchison is an interesting prospect as a playmaking wing/combo forward type who can get to the rim and finish through contact. There are question marks about his shooting and lateral quickness, keeping him from a prototypical 3-and-D role, but he will have value as a multidimensional combo forward with length, rebounding ability, vertical athleticism and playmaking. He’ll be able to defend multiple positions and should have a role as a rotation forward at the next level who can contribute across the board despite his unrefined ball handling and unproven jump shooting.
