Collin Sexton (Ball handler, 19, 6'2", 183 lbs)
Statistical Profile
Strengths
Sexton is an extremely quick ball handler with plus speed in the open floor. He’s got an impressive handle with above average shake which he leverages to create space against bigger defenders and get into the paint. He has good vision and timing in ball screen situations, and can finish in the lane in pick-and-roll despite standing 6'1.5" in shoes due to his ability to create space. He was one of the best and most frequent P&R ball handlers in the country, scoring .957 ppp on 188 possessions (87th percentile), and was able to create his own shot and get ample space despite his smaller frame.
Sexton has elite competitiveness, confidence and an impressive scoring profile. He can pull up from three off the dribble and gets to the free throw line at a high rate. He’s a very solid isolation scorer, finishing in 67th percentile on good volume. Defensively, his quickness and wingspan (6'7") make him a plus on ball defender when factoring in his competitiveness and intensity.
Weaknesses
Overall, Sexton is a one dimensional point guard with poor size. He has a small frame and is not particularly strong, so he will have to rely on his quickness to get into the lane and draw fouls, which may happen at a lesser rate at the next level. He’s not a good finisher around the rim, so if he isn’t able to draw fouls consistently, he will struggle to bring value in this respect.
Sexton plays out of control consistently, often taking inefficient jumpers and lunging out of position on defense. He has playmaking chops but does not use them with frequency, seemingly content to be a scorer and not much else. He is an extremely confident shooter but this often plays to his disadvantage because it is frankly not a plus skill. He’s a below average jump shooter and his efficiency declines because of the poor quality of his attempts. Even on unguarded catch-and-shoot attempts, he scored in the 19th percentile scoring .833 ppp.
Defensively, Sexton’s size is a major hindrance. He struggles to get through screens, and opposing ball handlers can bully him physically or shoot over him. He doesn’t have the quickest hands and posted a low steal rate, and his size to go along with a lack of elite vertical explosion don’t allow for many block opportunities.
Summary
The fascination with Sexton as a top 10 prospect is surprising and unwarranted. He is extremely competitive, draws contact well and has elite quickness, but his skillset is not one that helps win games in the NBA. He is small with a weak frame and is a poor jump shooter who takes inefficient shots off the dribble. He isn’t a very good playmaker and struggles with team defense. While he’s a good defender at the point of attack, bigger guards will bully him physically. In my opinion, Sexton does not have a path to becoming a starting guard in the NBA and should fall well out of the lottery.
