Kevin Huerter (Wing, 19, 6'7", 195 lbs)

Statistical Profile

Strengths

Huerter has legit size for an NBA wing and is extremely versatile offensively. As a passer, he has excellent vision and touch. He can handle the ball in pick-and-rolls and is an advanced decision maker off the bounce. However, his most ready and intriguing NBA skill is his shotmaking.

Huerter is likely the best shooting prospect in the class. He shot 41.7% from three on a significant number of attempts, and his shooting will translate to the next level. He has a lightning quick release to go along with textbook and repeatable mechanics. He is incredible running off screens and has unlimited range, making his spot up gravity a massive selling point and giving him a space in any NBA offense. He can shoot going to his left or right and is very advanced shooting on the move.

Huerter is a plus athlete and very agile which helps him on the defensive end despite a 6'7" wingspan. He has good instincts defensively and impressive timing and balance on close outs. He also boasts excellent body control and verticality.

Weaknesses

As a ball handler, Huerter has a lot of room to grow. He doesn’t have great burst or a particularly quick first step, and while he was able to occasionally isolate defenders in college, he may struggle against longer and more athletic defenders in the NBA. He’s a great shooter off the bounce, but he’ll need to develop better shake or a tighter handle in order to create space at the next level.

Huerter may have issues defensively against quicker ball handlers, but he has legitimate size, impressive leaping ability and should be able to hold his own against less heralded wings. He’s not particularly long and won’t be a consistent rebounder or a threat for stocks (steals + blocks), so his avenue towards success at the next level is confined to hitting his offensive ceiling and being an average defender.

Summary

Huerter is the best shooting prospect in the class from a standstill perspective. With his feet set, he has elite efficiency from three and will be a major threat coming off screens in the NBA. He will add a spacing dimension to whatever offense he slides into, and will be a seamless fit on offense right away. He is a good decision maker and an impressive passer, so he is not solely a spot up threat. His size is an asset as well. At 6'7", Huerter will be able to switch at a competent rate and be versatile enough defensively. While Huerter is not a complete player, he provides such great shooting, legitimate passing and competent enough defense with great size that he will likely be a highly useful role player. There is enough room for growth as well to becoming an Otto Porter-type starter, and Porter’s 3-and-D prowess recently earned him a max contract.
